“Where there is cake, there is hope…and there is always cake.”
This is the motto of the Depressed Cake Shop, which was created in 2013 as a unique (and delicious) platform to raise awareness and discuss these issues while raising money for local mental health charities.
Following on from Mens’ Health Week (themed on stress), it seems sensible to look at that other seemingly ubiquitous mental health issue: depression.
Did you know that one in four people will suffer from mental health issues at some point in their lives? And depression is the most common.
The Depressed Cake Shop raises awareness about depression and other mental health issues by creating a platform from which anyone, professional baker or cake lover, can hold a Pop Up Depressed Cake Shop to raise funds for their chosen mental health charity.
The only requirement is that the cakes must have some element of grey in them to signify the grey cloud that can descend over a beautiful world when someone is struggling with mental health issues. Many people choose to have grey cakes with a colourful element as a contrast.
If you would like to hold your own pop up shop to support a mental health charity then you can download a toolkit here. Or you can visit one of the next ones happening in the UK which is in Essex on 7th August.
Or if you are suffering from a mental health issue such as depression then talking to a psychotherapist can help. See how I can help you here or get in touch for a friendly chat.
